AS NZS 1336:2014 Eye and face protection—Guidelines
4.2.1 General
The hazards and risks associated with a particular task or area shall be evaluated and the most appropriate type of eye and face protector selected. The type of eye and face protectors recommended as suitable for a specific application are set out in Table 4.2, other than those for protection against laser radiation which are covered in Section 6. In the selection of eye and face protectors, the following should be considered:
(a) The nature of the hazards and risks to the eyes and face. For a combination of hazards, more than one eye and face protector may be needed, e.g. welding goggles and a suitable faceshield.
(b) The condition under which the operator is working. In particular, working in confined spaces may give rise to reflected hazards, requiring protection from optical radiation incident from the side and rear.
(c) Any issues of solvent resistance of the frame and/or oculars, lenses or filters.
(d) The visual requirements of the task.
(e) The condition of the operator’s eyesight.
(f) The appropriateness of the frame as a safety frame.
(g) The design and shape of safety spectacles should be in alignment (as much as (g) possible) with the shape of the wearer’s face, i.e. the gaps formed between the frame edges and the face should be minimized by selecting a frame that closely follows the individual’s facial contours.
(h) The personal preference of the wearer for particular safety frames. Comfort and appearance are usually the main factors in wearer preference. Lightness, ventilation and unrestricted vision are important considerations.
(i) A number of different frame styles/shapes should be offered to determine a best fit option for the wearer.
(j) The on-the-job experiences in using the eye and/or face protector. This Standard contains recommendations while product standards contain minimum requirements. There is no substitute for local knowledge of the specific factors in implementing the best solution.
