C7.1 The compressive strength obtained with the strength index should not be considered as a measure of the likely performance of the slag in concrete. Strength index is a measure of the reactivity of a given slag blended with a given cement and is dependent on the reactivity of both the slag and the cement. Results of tests for the relative water requirement are influenced by the cement used. The appropriate amount of slag to be used in a concrete mix design should be determined by trial mixes and/or other testing to ensure that the required concrete strength and/or durability performance is obtained as described in AS 1379.
7.2 Alternative test methods
Alternative methods of test may be used unless specifically excluded by Clause 7.1, provided that such methods have been validated by establishing that results do not differ from those produced by the methods referenced in this Standard by more than the amount given in Table 3. However, in any case of a dispute related to test results, determinations shall be conducted using the reference method.
C7.2 Obtaining prompt test data is important to end users. Rapid methods for fineness and loss on ignition are commonly used and accurate. Similarly, many standard methods for chemical testing take a considerable time, are costly and are commonly able to be carried out by accurate and consistent methods such as ICP or XRF techniques.
8 RETESTING
If a sub-sample of slag fails to comply with any of the requirements of Table 1 when tested in accordance with relevant test method(s), the relevant test(s) shall be repeated on two further sub-samples of the sample. If the retest shows both these further portions comply with the relevant requirement(s), the quantity represented by the sample shall be deemed to comply with this Standard.
NOTE: Suppliers making a statement of compliance with this Standard on a product, or on packaging or promotional material related to that product, should ensure that such compliance can be verified.
