AS 3816:2018 Management of clinical and related wastes
5.2.3  Physical performance
Receptacles shall have sufficient strength and durability, resistance to leakage, impact rupture and resistance to corrosion to contain the wastes they are required to hold, in the operating environment to which they will be subjected.
5.2.4 Unsecured receptacles
Receptacles intended to be used without being secured to a wall or other support should be of dimensions and a design so as to be stable during the normal rigours of lid opening, and should be stable if bumped or knocked by personnel working or attending the area where the bin is located.
5.2.5 Suitability for manual handling
Receptacles should be sized so as to limit the gross mass of the receptacle, consistent with risk assessment by a qualified assessor, for the manner in which the receptacle will be moved from the point of waste collection to waste storage. The suitability of the receptacle for handling by onsite waste treatment staff or for the waste contractor during vehicle loading and unloading should also be taken into account where applicable.
5.2.6 Suitability for being cleaned
Reusable receptacles and stands, or accessories for single-use receptacles, in clinical environments, should be of a design that allows easy cleaning and good infection control outcomes. Internal surfaces shall be smooth and impervious, and shall be cleaned regularly and whenever the internal area has been accidentally contaminated by unsealed clinical waste.
5.2.7 Suitability for reuse
Reusable receptacles should be inspected after they are emptied to make sure that they are clean, intact, and without leaks and that there are no cracks, protuberances or defects that may damage packages during transport.
5.2.8 Suitability for dangerous goods
Wastes that are dangerous goods or hazardous substances shall, in addition to any other requirements, be packaged, labelled and manifested in accordance with ADGC and the relevant Code of Practice before being transported by road or rail transport from the site of generation.
